Defoe saved the Queen (& the Three Lions)

June 23, 2010

Jermaine Defoe was England’s savior earlier today as he scored the only vital goal of the game opposing the Three Lions to Slovenia, and thus securing their passage into the next stage of the competition. However, with the USA winning against Algeria 1-0 as well (Donovan the scorer), England ended second in Group C, with the Americans topping the group on goal difference but with same points obtained, 5.

Capello must be a relieved man after all, as his gamble of playing Defoe instead of Heskey in attack proved to be a winner, and also may be lift the side’s spirit for the next round. England started this game well, and with only 23 minutes played, Milner managed a great cross in the box, and Defoe only had to cut the path of the cross towards goal, and although Handanovic got something on the shot, he could not stop it from going in. The pressure was lifted a little with that goal, and in the second half England could have easily doubled their lead, but Terry found Handanovic in his way after he sent a header towards goal, while Rooney hit the post with a one-on-one situation. Minutes later however he seemed to limping again, with may be that right ankle giving way yet again, and eventually was replaced by Joe Cole. From there on England played to conserve their 1-goal lead, and were lucky not to concede when the Slovenians piled the pressure in the closing minutes but Terry then Johnson blocked the shots from the Slovenian players to secure their first win and the qualification for the next round.

The next round can eventually see England face Germany if the latter win their game to be played later on tonight, and we all know how much these 2 sides hate each other :) and it could well be advantage to the Germans if they do make it first in their group.
