Fact: The season starts now

January 22, 2010

We’ve heard that chant a few times coming from Liverpool’s camp this season. First when they drew with Lyon in the CL and then when they got eliminated. We also heard it when they went on a run of poor results and then beat Man Utd. In fact, we’ve heard it so much and fans have been disappointed so many times that no one, Rafa included, have actually dared to mention it now. The win against Spurs was seen as a battle for the last CL place, but I personally believe that this is where Liverpool’s season will really kick start.

Liverpool’s failures has never been failure to beat the teams around them. It is their inability to beat the rest of the smaller teams. Even in their excellent year last season, they had too many draws with these teams and eventually paid the consequences. Fact. Rafa mentioned they had the least number of losses last year. Fact. Liverpool didn’t win the title. Get my drift?

The next few games for Liverpool will be crucial to get that 4th place guaranteed by Rafa. Of their next 5 games, 3 of them are against table-topping Arsenal (who’d knew I’d get to use that together this season!), mega-rich Manchester City, and the Merseyside Derby. These are the games which Rafa’s tactical nous comes in handy and usually comes out on top. In between they have to deal with little problems like Wolves and Bolton but if they can pick up 14 points from 18 pts available (including the win over Spurs) it will put them in a good position with good form to boot. Let’s not forget that will be about the time Torres et al comes back from injury.

So Liverpool fans, don’t despair. Fact. The season starts now.

    For the other nineteen Premiership clubs not blessed with a completely shite squad, didn’t the season start three weeks into August last year?

      We’ll see cockney gobshite, we’ll see. City are the only threat to Liverpool getting to 4th

        Calm down, calm down!

        I don’t think City are the only threat to Liverpool getting 4th. Tight season, interesting to see how it pans out.

        Got to have Villa and Spurs in the mix too.

    Rafa will be gone soon. He’s had enough. He’ll trade a pay off against the prospect of a new start in Italy or Spain.

    Best he. Rafa appears to be very lucky a majority of the Anfield regulars are so patient.

    @Kevin:

    Anfile regulars are ‘patient’ is an understatement. If they couldn’t win it last season, which I maintain was their best chance in a decade, I don’t see them winning again. Starting with Arsenal today :)

      Good shout Ducky. For me, LFC are one of those football teams who’s supporters think they have a divine right to win something each season. Newcastle, (too big to go down), United are the same. It must be summat do with fans that speak funny!!! Rafa to head off to Italy next year is Mystic Kev’s prediction.
