Luke Young gets picked for England V Brazil, and then retires!

November 11, 2009

Fabio Capello had a quandary this morning when Glen Johnson pulled out of his squad to face the Brazilians. He thought he would give Luke Young a quick phone-call and tell him to go get his kit and boots. Nobody says no to an England call up (unless you are Jamie Boo-Hoo Carragher)

However the Villain full back has said “No thanks” and has suddenly decided to retire from international football

He said: “I’m honoured to have been selected for my country and am flattered to have been selected again but at this stage of my career it is important that i focus on performing for Aston Villa”

And that was that! Not interested in maybe making a World Cup squad at the age of 30! Young has recently gone through a number of professional and private set backs, struggling with a thigh injury and the recent death of his teenage brother. He has recently been quoted as saying he had “lost the appitite for football” after the passing of his brother, who died while on holiday.

Sometimes life is more that just football.

When was his last callup? I wonder if he’s been waiting to say that to Don Fabio since his last callup to the squad

Luke Young had already told the FA that he was no longer available to represent England. They called him the other day to confirm whether or not that was still the case, rather than selecting him and him refusing.

Not a massive distinction, but a distinction nonetheless
