Magpies announce email address for stadium name

November 4, 2009

Yes you read that right Newcastle United have decided to call their stadium – @ St James’ Park with immediate effect.

Managing director Derek Llambias said the famous ground would bear the name of owner Mike Ashley’s Company until the end of the season, when naming rights would be sold on the open market. Ashley angered supporters of Newcastle United late last month when he announced the club’s plans to rename the stadium for commercial purposes, having taken them off the market.

Llambias said of the re-naming announcement;

“We could have worded it better, and that’s why we came out yesterday to explain what we’re trying to achieve. With the renaming it was always going to be whatever brand it was, at St James’ Park. For the remainder of this season, we already have on the Gallowgate so we’d like to take that branding through the rest of the stadium”

I can’t speak for the Newcastle fans but obviously the announcement of the renaming was met with hostility and I only can think how ludicrous it would be for Old Trafford to be renamed. There is clearly no thought for the fans and the history of the ground. As a football fan Ashley needs to go and let Newcastle move on with a new owner.

I also thought Sports Direct was a bit chavvy or is that just me?

When the Glazers, Abromavich’s, Hicks and Gillets et al have had their way with English football we will all be weeping in our cups – not laughing.

Schadenfreude is not a nice emotion.

I’m talking about the demise of English football.

    It’s a house of cards.

There is no demise. Its stronger than ever. I for one do not want to go back to the 80s where we had shit grounds, shit players, and shit chairmen who would rob their mothers for a laugh (yes thats you Martin Edwards and Ken Bates) The football is more attractive now more than ever.

Anyhow, there will be a European Super League soon, and everyone can then have a moan about that….

The problem is the debt that most clubs have racked up over the years. It’s unsustainable.

Plus, there a 50% rate of tax that comes into play next April and the high earning players in the UK will either expect a compensating increasing in salaries or they’ll head off to the more tax friendly havens in Europe.

I just hope they change the name back soon, if England win the World Cup bid for 2018 and it still has the same name that’s just embarrassing!

    And also laughable, sorry!

No sponsor names are allowed during FIFA tournament play. It will always be St. James’ Park during FIFA fixtures. ie Allianz Arena = FIFA World Cup Stadium Munchen, Signal Iduna Park = Westfalenstadion

I hoped that would be the case but hopefully by then it will be back to St James’ Park anyway

Check out the brilliant footy journo Henry Winter at The Telegraph, he mentioned something about “Sid James Park” Quite appropriate really with Mike Ashley carrying on in the Newcastle boardroom
