Steve cheats on Gareth with Gordon? Southgate sacked 18 months too late by Middlesbrough

It will hardly set the football world on fire, but Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his duties as manager of Middlesbrough, the club’s website has announced.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson quoted:

“This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make in all the time I have been in football. Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager. I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him. He is a good man and has all the qualities and integrity that we wanted in a manager. However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made.”

Gibson has the reputation of being one of the few top flight (well he was last year) chairmen who sticks by his managers. Remember Bryan Robson? Took him about a million years to ‘move him on’. He has stuck with Southgate for too long some might say. Always considered a promising coach, Southgate has at times looked like a fish swimming around in a pool of sharks. It was only a matter of time.

However, his demise has come at the expense of someone else looking for a job. The rumour mill dictates that the position has already been filled. And the boots being sized up are for a certain Mr Gordon Strachan.

So maybe all those pats on the back for Mr Gibson for his God-like tolerance should be taken back. His club are currently one point off top spot. They will almost definitely be in the mix come the end of the season. But now another piece of skirt has caught his eye so he has dumped on his wife Gareth, taking the kids with him. Is this fair on Southgate? Probably not. But it just goes to show that even the most faithful of men in football like Steve Gibson, cant refuse the advances of a flaming redhead when he winks an eye and shows a bit of leg. The sport’s Plain Janes, like Southgate, will always eventually lose their roles and homes.

Football is a fickle game of love

I’m surprised to read this. Being sacked when you’re one point off top spot usually suggest there’s something going on behind the scenes, but that’s very very unlikely here and there’s been nothing to suggest that’s the case. I never thought Southgate was up to the job in the first place, but give the man some credit. Hasn’t had much money to deal with, and after relegation last season it would have been easy for him to lose interest in ‘boro, but lifting them to near summit in the Championship has been a very good effort.

But yeah, you’re right Rob. As soon as Strachan’s name popped up in the mixer, there was only one way Gareth was going to go, and that was out. I guess you can’t blame Gibson. Strachan has a proven track record, although from what I hear (from Sunday morning’s taxi driver who was a Scot and a Celtic fan), he’s not a likeable guy – both in his jovial way of speaking to the press etc. and the style of his Football.

    Time will tell.
