Rio’s “trial by fire”

October 14, 2009

‘Don’ Fabio has given United’s and England’s center back, Rio Ferdinand, another chance to redeem himself and prove the critics wrong after a nightmare game he had in Ukraine last Saturday, as England face Belarus today with a much re-shuffled squad, where the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, A.Cole etc will be absent, and the likes of Agbonlahor, Crouch, Wright-Phillips recalled.

Rio has been suffering from a back problem for some time now, and has even missed many games for United due to this problem, the latest one being against Sunderland where he did not even make it to the subs bench. But last Saturday he started for England, and made a horrendous error which led to keeper Green being sent off, as Rio failed to deal with the on-coming opponent properly, allowing the latter to get in the box, whereby Green committed a foul in an attempt to rescue things and was sent-off as a result.

Since that day all media are criticizing Rio’s performance, as well as questioning his fitness. We all still remember his blunder against Man City which led to that equalizer on 90th minute, but was eventually saved from being the scape-goat as Owen scored the winner deep in added-time. So may be Rio is indeed lacking fitness and confidence, but am sure with some games under the belt he’ll be back to his best both for United and England.

The criticism of Rio has been in the extreme. He has been playing with an injury all season. You can count the mistakes he has made in the last two years on one hand. Id still rather he be in my backline rather than any centreback in the world. Without him United would not have won half the trophies they have in the past 5 years
