Heartbreaking News: USMNT Striker Charlie Davies Injured in Fatal Car Accident

October 13, 2009

USA vs T&T

Oh this is so sad.

Charlie Davies was in an accident today in Washington DC on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in which a person riding in the car with him was killed.  At this time it is unknown if Davies was the driver or a passenger.

According to US Park Policeman David Schlosser, “The car was pretty much split in half.”

Davies, along with two other occupants, slid into a guardrail on the GW Parkway around 3:15 AM Tuesday.

Davies’ injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

Davies, who also plays for Ligue 1’s FC Sochaux, was in DC this week as the USMNT prepare to face Costa Rica in their world cup qualifier Wednesday night.

I follow Charlie Davies on Twitter and I’m very fond of him.  He seems like such a fun loving, easy going guy who maintains a tight friendship with his teammates.  My heart goes out to all involved and their families.

3:15 AM on the G-Dub doesn’t sound very good either.  Oh just so sad.

22 year old Ashley Roberta of MD has been named as the deceased person.  Another female was also in the vehicle.

Per US Men’s coach Bob Bradley “Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the people in the car and the families of the others involved. As a team, we are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard.”

Our sincere sympathies go to the family of Ashley Roberta.

I believe this may be her Twitter. She mentions College Park, which is home to the University of Maryland.  It makes sense.  Beautiful girl.

Davies is said to be in surgery, and injuries may be career threatening.

So so sad.

UPDATE Oct 14:
All audience members in tonight’s USMNT V Costa Rica match are asked to cheer for the entire 9th minute in honor of “Chuck Deezy.” Such a fun loving guy.

Check out this video of Stuart Holden and Charlie Davies just being dudes.

Katie, BBC football who lead with this story, report a catalogue of serious injuries, including multiple facial fractures, a badly broken right leg and a lacerated bladder. His presence in South Africa for the world Cup next year is now ruled out, but given his level of fitness, the prognosis for Charlie to resume his playing career is good. RIP Ashley.

It also sounds as though Davies was not the driver.
In the US, if he had been driving and especially if alcohol was involved, he could have been prosecuted for manslaughter and civil lawsuits from Ashley’s family could have followed, basically leaving him without any hope for a career. Not to mention the guilt one would feel for the rest of their lives.
And I’m now understanding that Ashley Roberta was friends with a few people I know and a few friends know her family. So terrible.
Pretty much everyone I know has made the mistake of drink-driving at least once in their lives. It’s so hard to see what happens when, in one situation, it ends in tragedy.

Goosebumps reading Ashley’s last twitter posting.
In this age when people pass and their faceboooks and twitters stay on, it is so hard.
Poor Mr and Mrs Roberta. Absolutely beautiful vibrant girl gone at 22……
