DC United Boys Get Starkers for ESPN Magazine’s Body Issue

October 8, 2009

dcunakedLads representing my town, Washington DC.  And making us proud.  Or slightly uncomfortable rather.

ESPN Magazine’s “Body Issue” hits US stands Friday and this year, the lads of DC United will be featured along with USMNT and AC Milan defender, Oguchi Onweyu.

Ok, ok.  I might have a gander at Chris Pontius, but I still stand by my opinion that men posing naked are more comical than anything else….  Ben Olsen’s facial expression pretty much sums it up.

But the Body Issue features both male and female athletes in the nude, and Editor in chief Gary Belsky says the photographs  are “tastefully done,” with strategically placed equipment so no actual bits and pieces are exposed.  The magazine will also seek to rank “best bodies,” which I think is just a tad overboard.  ESPN is a leader in legitimate sports journalism.  These athletes are competing in their respective sports, not in a hot-body competition.  Leave those kinds of countdowns to us here at WDKF and Kickette. We throw a half naked WAG in the mix from time to time because readership increases and a bit of “Football’s Fittest” because I’m bored on a Friday night.

So, even among the most respected Sports broadcasting corporations, does everyone subscribe to the mantra that “sex sells?”  And we’re talking about the lads here too.  It’s no longer just Anna Kournikova in bikinis on the pages of Sports Illustrated.

So what do you think- is this trend denigrating sport in any way? Improving it?  Don’t ask me to think right now- I’m looking at Gooch’s abs?  Please share your thoughts.

Comical is the right word, unsexy is another, although that doesn’t apply to the Gooch picture. Yum. Somehow it all looks a bit tongue in cheek so I personally don’t mind it too much if it’s a one-off, but I am totally fatigued by sex selling everything, especially in the music industry. Most pop videos these days, especially for rappers, are soft porn. Any girl act seems to have to sell her body as well as her music, and the sight of Madonna doing her open legged, pelvic thrusts is really too repellent to mention. Please retire Madonna. Is this the way sport will go, perhaps it’s the slippery slope. There did seem to be a bit of a concensus to sex up the girls football to get more people interested. Is it the only way. Keep your clothes on guys, but if you can’t don’t keep the socks on. Oh dear. To prove my point see picture of Berbatov in earlier post. Scrumptious. I rest my case.

      Great response, Shallow girl.
      I agree fully.
It is a slippery slope and then it’s a question of “well if we can’t beat it, do we join it?” re: things like bringing attention to women’s football.
And Madonna gives me vommy mouth.

And besides a 5 oclock shadow the first thing I notice about a man is his style so clothes are a big point of attraction.
Even I was mesmerized by that photo of Berba….even with the cancer stick coming out of his mouth.
