Are Chelsea Setting the Stage for a League Title?

September 23, 2009

Chels League

With 6 matches played and 18 points earned, Chelsea remain the only unbeaten side in the Premiership.

And while one could argue that the Blues haven’t been tested by top rated clubs this season as yet, 3 goals and quality display of football Sunday against Spurs no doubt added to the confident air surrounding Stamford Bridge.

But are Chelsea on track to take the League this year?

Chelsea are certainly capable of winning titles. The London club have been either winners or runners-up for League Title since the 2003-2004 season until Manchester United and Liverpool covered those positions respectively for 2008-2009 although the Blues did manage an FA Cup and a recovered a bit of penalty revenge v Manchester United in the Charity Shield in August.

And this season shows the same promise we have seen in the past.  Despite the resignation of CEO Peter Kenyon, the club has been able to enjoy a little bit of stability as of late with what seems like a fixed manager in Carlo Ancelotti after 2 post Special One years of  heavy rotation including Grant, Scolari, and Hiddink.

Sure, the club has seen a transfer ban extending until January 2011, but this will likely have little impact on the current season.

What may affect Chelsea’s solid roll is the African Nations Cup.  Come Winter, the Blues could be without the likes of Essien, Mikel, Drogba, and Kalou.

And Winter tends to bring about increased injury as well, so Anelka and Sturridge will need to stay fit or Chelsea’s midfielders and defenders may have even greater need to push up.

In Blues injury news, Drogba appears to be fit after sustaining injury against Spurs and Joe Cole and Yuri Zhirkov are set to play against QPR in Carling Cup play Wednesday.  So for now, it appears the squad will have key players fit.

I did want to break up the heavy Manchester United posting to appear somewhat impartial, difficult as that may be, but also to open up discussion about Chelsea’s chances this year.

So please, let us know what you think.

Blues for title or not a snowball’s chance in hell?

I think Chelsea are favourites for the league this year

I think the transfer ban will give them extra impetus, and they are always as consistent as hell..last year was a bit of a blip, but they are United’s real challengers
