Unsung hero: Fletcher

Fletcher tackles Arshavin

With the new season having just started, Darren Fletcher is proving to be one of our best central midfielders as the games go on. It may be still very early to judge him, but with the games he has played so far he has impressed me personally. He has shown the passion and intelligence needed, and in the Arsenal game has proved to be an important pawn in the midfield. He made himself felt physically and was mentally prepared to tackle opponents  and although Arsene Wenger did not name any names while saying United had a ‘hitman’ to kick his players off the field, we all know the man being targeted is Fletcher.

Fletcher played an important part in our qualification last season to the CL finals, but due to a red card he received at the Emirates for a challenge on Fabregas, which for me seemed a perfect one but alas not to the ref and linesman, he missed the final and as a result United did not have a stronghold in the midfield and Barça overpowered them.

This is the same player who was left out most of the time on the bench or in the reserve squad, with many teams in the past trying to sign him and at one point he even wanted to leave but for the assurances from Sir Alex, and his willingness to play for United has now ranked him among one of the invalueable players in the squad.

Still he is not like a Keano or Gerrard, he still lacks the mentality of being a true leader, someone who when needed can have a go at his own players when they are performing poorly in a match, but he has progressed but the same thing cannot be said however for Carrick, who I feel is losing his determination and skills, and according to some rumours he even clashed with Sir Alex as did Anderson.

I think he’s a reasonable squad player at best, but do think man utd would miss him plugging the gaps if he left.

Btw the tackle in the picture should’ve lead to a penality ;)

I agree he has definitely improved over the years but there are better players available to replace him. If Anderson and Carrick become consistent and Hargreaves is fit don’t think he would find a place in the team.

More like unsung hack, that tackle in the pic was a definite penalty but of course penalties for opposing teams aren’t allowed at Old Trafford.

i was going to write a piece on fletcher. A few points to make on the comments above:

I was a Fletcher “hater” for many years. Saw no point in his existence in the Utd squad. Used to come in have one good game and then five bad ones. As i said in my Utd v Ars article i would have sold him in a heartbeat.
Truth now is that Fletcher is our most consistent central midfielder. I would go as far as to liken his play to Bryan Robson…ok he is not a leader and does not get Robbo’s goals, but he is the type of midfielder every team needs. Versitile and reliable..will always give 100%..the other point is that his passing and tactical play the last two years have been outstanding. He is no longer just a “squad player” but a vital cog in the middle…and this is coming from his biggest doubter. People will give him stick because of his squad player past and his ..ahem..scottishness. Fergie wont have favourites in the middle, so if Anderson (£19m) Carrick (£18m) or Hargreaves (£20m) do not cut it they will not play ahead of Fletch.

Like all unsung heroes, im happy he plays for us…Liverpool and Arsenal would love a player like him. And i would take him over a player like Mikel every day of the week.

And yes that tackle against Arshavin should have been a pen, but he deserves some luck after that non-penalty in the semi last year that undeservedly made him miss the final

Let’s not forget Arsenal had the benefit of a penalty that shouldn’t have been given against Celtic.

..and lets not forget that “same old Arsenal, always cheating” as was sung on sunday…its a classic

always wondered where would fletcher be if hargreaves has never been injured. the silver lining he is.

I’m so glad I didn’t know you yet back when you were slamming Fletch! He’s work horse for the team and one of those guys who can fit in just about anywhere.
I was so angry when he was red carded and banned from playing against Barca…I really think that whole game would have gone very differently if Fletch had been on the team that day. I believe he’d have helped us hoist a trophy instead of going home empty handed.
But that’s last season and now we’re on to the unknown of a new season…I’ll stay tuned to your new writing gig. Cheers!
