Tit for Tat: the da Costa and Savio Fiorentina-West Ham Swap

But first and most importantly, Matthew Upson will stay at Upton Park.  Excellent.  He was just starting to catch my eye.

And now:

West Ham United have signed Portuguese defender Manuel da Costa from Fiorentina in a little tit for tat with the Italian club who have  signed U-21 German midfielder Savio.

West Ham seem to have been the recipients on the better end of the deal as they will retain 50% of Savio’s sell-on value.

Hammers chief executive Scott Duxbury said:

“This is a good deal for everyone concerned. Although not for the want of trying, Savio has struggled to make an impact for various reasons, while Manuel is also looking for a fresh start. Had our financial situation been different we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio.  With the fee we received for Savio and 50% sell-on together with acquiring the highly-rated Da Costa, it represented a great deal.”

Well, it’s a nice bit of good news then for a club that seems to be plagued by bad news as of late.  And Matthew Upton’s commitment to the club is reassuring.
