Transfer Window Closing Tuesday: Last Minute Move Rumors for Matthew Upson, Benjani, David James….

August 31, 2009

The Summer transfer window will finally come to a close Tuesday.  I was feeling relieved as watching players move around football leagues like players on a chess board is starting to take its toll on my sometimes naive belief that just maybe, some footballers actually play for love of the game.  And even rumors that don’t come to fruition give me a bit of anxiety (Vida to Barcelona?).

Some transfers have been exciting; some disappointing; and it appears there still may be some emotion evoking changes to come in the next few days.

As one of my friends is a West Ham supporter, and surprisingly the Hammers typically don’t bring numbers to the pub, being a good friend I’ll  join her to watch the odd Clash of the Titans like West Ham V Blackburn Saturday.  But at least spectatorship is made a bit easier by 90 minutes of Matthew Upson.  I’ve taken to the man since he’s sported a new barnet.  But today, Serie A’s Fiorentina have made a bid for the 30 year old England International.
Gianfranco Zola has said previously that he would like Upson to stay at Upton Park but the defender may fetch a decent sum from the Italian side.  And Upson may likely want to go as Fiorentina will participate in the Champions League.
Well, my friend may have to at least bribe me with a pint of Magners if I’m to watch West Ham minus Upson.  Either that or Radoslav Kovac is going to have to start taking his shirt off…..

It appears that some of summer’s big spenders will unload a few players before Tuesday as well.
Hull have bid for Manchester City’s Benjani, and the 31 year old Zimbabwe International is said to be one step away from signing with the Tigers.  Hull City also picked up Sunderland defender Paul Shane.
And Real Madrid is said to be in talks with Tottenham over the sale of Rafael Van Der Vaart and a contract is all but signed.  I really hope this one is true because most likely one of my favorite fashionistas, Sylvie Van Der Vaart will likely be in London.  Sylvie and Cheryl Tweedy in the same town? London just got even more stylish.

The money from the sale of Joleon Lescott seems to be burning a hole in David Moyes’ pocket as he’s interested in slapping down £6 million for Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga.  And rumor has it the Toffees are interested in bringing David Bentley in from White Hart Lane as well.

Speaking of Tottenham, it looks like Harry Houdini has his eyes set on snagging David James from Pompey and for a lump sum of £8 million, he’ll take Niko Kranjcar as well.  So that’s Defoe, Crouchy and his nachos, and now possibly James and the Croatia International all poached from Fratton Park.  Anyone else, Harry?

And that seems to be it for the big rumors today.

Just two more days of this and then we can focus back on the game at hand.

BallHype: hype it up!
FootballBlips: vote it up!

cant wait for the transfer window to be over with, im with you on vidic to barcelona – united sans vida? unthinkable, especially with ferdinand getting injured every other game and evans needing an ankle surgery.

Be assured United do not do business unless it suits them..Vidic is going nowhere..though i do think that if we get a bid of around £35m at the end of the season we should accept it as i have a lot of faith in Jonny Evans’ development. Every player has his price

Latest news: Upson to stay at Upton.
    Benjani talks broken down.
    No update on David James.
And now Pompey are looking to grab Tal Ben-Haim from Eastlands.

No update on Rafa V.D.Vaart. Or Sylvie rather. Rafa is just a byproduct in that one.
