Rooney celebrates

Wayne Rooney was the man of the match in the second half for Manchester United as he led the Red Devils to a brilliant win against host Wigan Athletic. The match started well for the Red Devils, and although they were not clicking really well, they did create two wonderful chances to put the game to bed in the opening 20 minutes, with Fletcher, then Scholes both failing to score as Wigan struggled.

However, as the half went on, Wigan got back in the game, and Ben Foster had to produce a brilliant save to keep the Lactics at bay. Rooney was busy as usual trying to keep the ball moving, with Berbatov as well involved, although in his usual languid style. 0-0 at half time, and I thought it was going to be another one of those days where United miss chances and settle for a draw or could be surprised by a goal from the opposition.

But Sir Alex must have switched on the “hair-dryer” in the dressing room, as when the second half started, United were looking more lively, and effectively, on 56 minutes, a brilliant header from Rooney after a pin point cross from Valencia, saw the striker open the scoring for United, and in the wake his 100th for the club. Just after kickoff Wigan could have equalized had it not been Foster once again to the rescue. But the action went on so quickly at the other end, and Berbatov used his skills brilliantly to lob the advancing Kirkland, and then another super move to finish past the advancing defender on the goal-line (58th minute). United were on fire then, and Rooney fired one from close range on 65th minute, 3-0, and his 101th goal for United.

Michael Owen, who came on as a substitute for Rooney, then grabbed his first league goal with United on 85th minute after a brilliant pass from Nani set him up in the box. The same Nani was spot on in added time after he curled a freekick past the stranded Kirkland, 5-0 final whistle, and what a way to wash that defeat against Burnley in midweek.

Next weekend United will face Arsenal in what can be a fantastic match given Arsenal are already “gunning” goals in the 2 league and 1 champions league matches they have played, but United will have to proceed more cautiously and effectively if they want to claim the 3 points.

    Woohoo Manu FTW!!!!
Yes next week will be tough, cause if we continue to give away golden opportunities like we did in the 1st half, Arsenal will punish us. Great article Rite$h … are you already a professional football journalist? It certainly looks like you are one!

Manu has to be careful next week. If they keep on wasting opportunities like in the 1st half, Arsenal will punish them!
