chelsea 2 hull city 1

August 15, 2009

The Premier League is back with a bang.

The season opener between Chelsea and Hull City at Stamford Bridge ended in a 2-1 win for the home side. Didier Drogba scored twice, the winner in injury time, as Chelsea came from behind to beat Hull.

New Hull signing Stephen Hunt scored the first goal of the match in the 27th minute after George Boateng’s deflected shot fell in Hunt and Hull’s favour. A dream debut for the newcomer, who had been booed by the Chelsea fans for the infamous clash with Petr Cech a couple of seasons ago which left the goalkeeper with a fractured skull.

Chelsea drew level ten minutes later when Drogba curled a superb free-kick  over the wall and to the right bottom corner of Boaz Myhill’s goal, after George Boateng conceded a weak foul just outside of the penalty box. Hull gave Chelsea a couple of scares with the scoreline at 1-1. The game was heading for a draw until the Ivory Coast hitman received a pass from Deco in the 91st minute and scored with a cross-shot effort that looped over Myhill.

A winning start for Carlo Ancelotti, and a great start to the Premier League season. T’was a very very entertaining match to say the least. If Hull City can play like that every game, they’ll have no problem in staying in the Premier League at all.
