Chelsea win Community Shield

Manchester United lost on penalties again today for the Community Shield match which opposed them to Chelsea at Wembley stadium.

The match started well for United though, with Nani scoring a 25-yard thunderbolt for the Red Devils on the 10th minute mark. However, United then allowed themselves to drift away after creating some chances to put this one to bed, and Chelsea gained the upper hand in the midfield and started dominating. To make things worse, Ben Foster, touted as the next number 1 for United, showed clearly he had lost his nerves as he struggled to clear back passes and was caught twice in the first half, but luckily he escaped unscathed as Chelsea continued pressing. Half time 1-0, I thought United would change their approach and be more offensive in the second one.

Though United restarted brightly, with Berbatov creating a chance, Chelsea were once again upto the task of controlling the ball, and on 52 minutes, a cross from Malouda was only flapped away timidly by Foster, and Carvalho headed the ball into the empty net to equalize. 20 minutes later, Lampard was on the receiving end of another cross, and he blasted the ball towards goal, with Foster yet again showing some weak hands, and the ball hit the post, crossed the goal line and came out again, but a goal it was for Chelsea, who took the lead. However, controversy surrounds this goal, since at the beginning of the action, which was for United, Ballack clearly elbowed Evra in the face in Chelsea’s half, and although the referee Chris Foy saw it, he did not intervene, and while United players stopped, awaiting for the whistle, Chelsea continued their attack, leaving Evra clutching his face on the ground.

United however managed to equalize 2-all in added time, with Rooney slotting home after a brilliant Giggs’ pass, sending the game to penalty shootout, though from the replay it seems Rooney was just offside, but not signaled by the linesman. The fatidic shootout then started. Lampard, Ballack, Drogba and Kalou scored for Chelsea, while only Carrick managed to score for United, with Giggs having his shot saved by Cech’s righ leg, while Evra had a tamed shot which Cech gathered gleefully (again a miss after Audi Cup)! 4-1 it was after penalties, and Chelsea deserved to win this Shield since they were way better than United throughout the game, and added to this defeat, United may have lost Nani as well due to a shoulder injury he sustained after a challenge from Terry.

you got the addtoany button on it! i didnt have to do it this time. lol.

anyway, a lot have been said about united without ronaldo, personally i dont think that the biggest problem united will face this season or the next. the biggest problem is whose going to take edwin van der sar’s place once hes retired.

ben foster was excellent when he went on loan to stoke city watford for two seasons, but hes definitely a nervous fellow when playing for manchester united. im still hoping that he’ll keep his spot in the 1st XI just to build on his confidence, in the hope that it will bring back the form he showed while at stoke city. replacing with kuszscak in the next game will definitely dampen him more.

Foster need to work hard if he wants to be number 1, he has failed to convince today, and I wont be surprised to see Capello leaving him out for a while in the England squad.
May be we’ll have another worry concerning Nani, if his injury is serious he may be out for some time, and we dont have too many wingers as well, giggs being too old to have the pace to run up and down the left. Am also disappointed with Fergie’s choice of kickers, should have allowed Rooney and Owen to go first.

Foster on loan at stoke hehehe Is there a “spot the wdkf non fact of the week” game going on that I’m not privy to? I love games!

The game brought on a sense of deja vu. I had just watched gi joe a couple of days ago and the resembelence is uncanny – entertaining for the first 30 mins then everything goes to shit. That said, I was watching the game at a caf wearing my ’07 replica kit. cursed I tell you! cursed!! so I guess the responsibility for this defeat falls solely on my shoulders.
