There Will Be Blood: Gold Cup Final Leaves USA Hungry

July 27, 2009

Today it was Mexico who drank up USA’s milkshake….right from a giant Copa Oro.

America fell in a 5-0 loss against their biggest rivals today in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at Giants Stadium leaving the Yanks hungry for revenge when the two nations meet again on August 12th in Mexico City.

Bob Bradley fielded a squad of inexperienced players and he got an inexperienced reaction from the boys who fell to pieces after a dodgy call and subsequently capitalized penalty by Gerardo Torrado in the 59th minute.

Really though, the Gold Cup is all a bit Mickey Mouse and Bradley was right to gauge the talent of up and coming young American players by letting them experience play against the nations they will face in World Cup Qualifying matches for the remainder of this year and  leading up to 2014.  As of now, Brian Ching and Stuart Holden are the only Gold Cup squad members rumored to be in the running for a trip to South Africa.

Mexico v. USA has always been an anticipated tie.  As the US defeated Honduras earlier in the week, I was hoping to see Mexico take Costa Rica so the final would be more exciting.  And as Brian Ching twittered, the two National squads shared a charter flight from Chicago to New York on Friday morning.  That must have been awkward.

Mexico will face an entirely different group of Americans in August- the group which defeated Spain and held the mighty Brazil down two goals before losing 3-2 in the Confederations Cup Final. A squad which will hopefully feature Benny Feilhaber so if the boys lose at least there will be a bit of eye candy to take the sting out of the bite.

So I’m hoping the Americans keep their heads up, get back to work, and take it to Mexico in a couple of weeks.

And I’m hoping that either ESPN or Fox Soccer Channel can muster a half decent pair of announcers because Max Bretos and Christopher Sullivan have reached a ranking of 4 out of 5 on the Alexi Lalas scale of mild retardation after another 90 minutes of their spouting cod shit today.

Roll on Estadio Azteca.

this is exactly why we need you here, had no idea the gold cup final was on. after watching the replays on youtube, have to agree with you – the next game will be different, other than the two aforementioned american players didnt recognise any of them and mexico called up a strong squad for the gold cup – carlos vela was amazing.

this game was all BS if u ask me. The mexicans think that they are so good for beating us 5-0. None of the starters were playing FYI. Beasley, dempsey, altidore, howard, bocanegra, bornstein, donovan. all those guys plus more weren’t there. just wait until world cup qualifying when our boys are back and we are gonna kick mexican ass. Also the penalty kick was the biggest BS. mexican elbows american in face and falls on him and american gets called for a penalty. BS. i was at the game and these mexicans are way too out of control as well if you ask me. I got beer thrown on me every time mexico scored a goal and they go nuts blow there fog horns all game in my ear. annoying as hell.

      a) Beasley is a worthless sack.
The minute he was left out of the squad in Confeds Cup is the minute USA looked like they had pulled their heads out. Even in his hey day he was mediocre and over-rated. Let’s move on.

      b) any time Mexico or any Central American nation plays within US borders expect to be in the minority as far as support goes. I could have been within stalking distance of my beloved Benny Feilhaber but passed because I knew it would be Honduran madness (that was the week of the whole political coup or whatever is going on over there). Personally I like their rowdiness and 7 hour pregame drinking sessions in the parking lot but I wasn’t prepared for Honduran political riot.

      c) Dodgy call on penalty- yes, but there were still 4 more goals.

      d) it’s the Gold Cup. Who is really bothered?

      e) Aug. 12th. Mark it.

      f) Thanks for reading and commenting.

Just to let you know Mexico didn’t have their top squad either, they should on august 12. At most 4 of the players from the gold cup will play. It will still be a close match and I doubt the U.S. can play as they did in the confederations cup, they probably will win, I say 2-1.

I am sorry, how many times has the USA “A-team” won on Mexican soil?? yeah that right, ZERO!!! The USA will be lucky to get a tie. Bob Bradley is horrible, his defensive schemes suck. Need I remind you that the USA lost to Costa Rica 3-1 and was down 2-0 to El Salvador!!!!! Italy and Brazil scored 3 goals in Confed Cup and the USA could not maintain a lead by 2 goals in the finals.
