To develop or not to develop

April 22, 2009

Everton knocked out Man Utd in the FA Cup but all the talk seems to be about Sir Alex’s first team selection and disregarding the FA Cup as a worthless competition.

Personally, I’ve always liked the development of players and giving them chances. However, I have a mixed opinion on this selection. Sometimes it is a case of balancing the right mix, and I seriously thought he got it all wrong.

The Da Silva twins on either flanks of the defence was excellent. We’ve all seen Rafael in the League Cup and he’s proven that he’s better than Gary Neville at right back this season. Fabio did well enough and I feel Darren Gibson will be the next Darren Fletcher, the utility man you need at every big club that is willing to play 2nd fiddle to other big names but knows that his services is well appreciated.

The selection of Welbeck and Macheda however was questionable. We’ve all seen Macheda’s heroics as a sub but this is the first time I’ve seen him start a game. To start your first game on such a big occassion is a big ask of a boy who’s only 17. Welbeck didn’t seem ready and while United overall were the better side, did not really threaten Tim Howard’s goal.

I personally feel that Sir Alex should have started with Tevez and Berbatov, who himself takes a while to get into the game. I don’t think Sir Alex is wrong to pick the youngsters, as you have to consider that they had a game on Wednesday and also one game coming this Tuesday. What do you think? Comments pls!

i think the interactions between welbeck and macheda was promising, but both players had a hard time finding some sort of understanding with tevez.

apparently the pitch had a play on the lack of shots during the match, so maybe having berbatov in the starting 11 wouldn’t have changed the outcome.

glad you’ve come to your senses about darron gibson now. lol. although i dont see him much as a utility player.

The stage of the competition had reached needed some more experienced players to support the younger ones. The Da Silva brothers were spot on, as well as gibson. May be SAF should have played rooney with macheda, or at least berbatov, so that the youngster would not have been left all alone upfront. Welbeck was more on the left wing, while tevez had a CAM role.
