Manchester United lost the final of the Audi Cup 6-7 on penalties last night to hosts Bayern Munich. The score after 90 minutes was 0-0.

In the first half both teams had chances to open the score, with Bayern’s Mario Gomez hitting the bar, while United’s Berbatov hit the upright with an acrobatic kick. Owen and Berbatov were leading the attack from the start but could not find a way through. In the second half Rooney was introduced, and both him and Owen had chances to wrap up the game but Bayern’s Rensing came out unhurt, as Rooney shot high and wide what should have been a winner.

The match went into penalty shootout, where Rensing denied Evra, followed by Van der Sar saving from Pranjic for United. Rooney scored United’s 5th, putting pressure on Sosa, but he managed to score as well, sending the game into sudden death. Evans then missed for United, leaving Van Buyten to slot home for Bayern.

Penalty shootout: Giggs scored; Baumjohann scored; Anderson scored; Braafheid scored; Nani scored; Altintop scored; Evra missed (saved); Pranjic missed (saved); Rooney scored; Sosa scored; Fletcher scored; Ottl scored; Scholes scored; Badstuber scored; Evans missed(saved); van Buyten scored.

Despite the loss, Rio Ferdinand was proud of the team’s display and says he’s confident for the new season.
